La noire de...
Ousmane Sembene / Senegal/France 1966 / 1h / Digital / French with English subtitles
Cast: Mbissine Thérèse Diop, Anne-Marie Jelinek, Robert Fontaine, Momar Nar Sene.
Sembene’s first feature film is also a seminal film in the history of African cinema. It tells the tragic story of a Senegalese girl employed as a servant to a French couple. Her initial enthusiasm regarding the colonial motherland and employment is quickly transformed into a profound sense of despair, as she finds herself being treated by the family like an object, a non-person, ‘the black girl’.
